How it works
Set the size by pixels, percentage, or the longest/shortest edge. The calculated output dimensions update as you type, before anything is processed.
Fit inside keeps the aspect ratio within a box; Fill & crop fills the box exactly and trims the overflow from the centre; Exact stretches to the numbers you type and warns you that it distorts. Enlarging beyond the original is off unless you allow it — it can't add detail.
Quality matters when shrinking a lot: a single-step browser resize can look jagged, so Image halves the image in steps and finishes with a high-quality pass. The output contains no metadata.
Worked example
A 4032 × 3024 phone photo (4:3):
- Fit inside 1920 × 1080 → 1440 × 1080 (height is the limit; nothing is cropped).
- Fill & crop 1080 × 1080 → 1080 × 1080, taking the centre 3024 × 3024 px of the original.
- Longest edge 1600 → 1600 × 1200.
Downscaling to 1440 × 1080 happens in 2 steps (2016×1512 → 1440×1080) so fine detail stays smooth instead of aliasing.
Edge cases handled
- EXIF-rotated phone photos: dimensions are the displayed (upright) ones.
- Exact mode warns when the aspect ratio changes.
- Upscaling is opt-in and flagged.
- Extreme ratios never produce a 0-pixel edge.
- Transparent images keep transparency in PNG/WebP; JPEG asks for a background.
- Dimensions are limited to 16,384 px per edge (a browser canvas limit).
