How it works

Start from a square logo or image (at least 512 × 512 px is best). Image creates PNG icons at 16, 32 and 48 px (browser tabs and search results), 180 px (apple-touch-icon.png for iOS) and 192 and 512 px (Android and installed web apps), previewed on light and dark backgrounds.

Padding keeps details away from the edge, where platforms may round or mask the icon. A background colour is useful for iOS, which fills transparency with black. You'll be warned about non-square images, very tight padding and transparency.

The ZIP contains every PNG, a site.webmanifest and the HTML to paste into your page's head. A classic .ico file is planned for a later phase.

Worked example

A 1024 × 1024 logo with 10% padding: the 32 px icon draws the logo at 26 px, centred, with 3 px of space on each side. Paste this into your head:

<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="16x16" href="/favicon-16x16.png">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
<link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">

Edge cases handled

  • Wide or tall images are centred inside a square, with a warning.
  • Transparent icons are previewed on both light and dark tiles.
  • Small sizes are drawn from the full image with stepped downscaling for clarity.
  • Animated sources use the first frame, after confirmation.
  • ICO export: not in Phase 1 — PNG icons work in all modern browsers.
